A senior leader of the Bangladesh Awami League from Gaibandha district died on Sunday while in jail custody after being taken ill, prison officials said.
The deceased was Shamikul Islam Lipon, president of the Gaibandha district unit of the Bangladesh Awami League.
He had been detained for several months in connection with a case filed at Sadar Police Station.
According to jail authorities, Lipon fell sick early Sunday while in Gaibandha District Jail. He was first taken to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. As his condition worsened, doctors referred him to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, where he later died.
Gaibandha District Jail Super Anwar Hossain said Lipon had previously received medical treatment during his time in custody. He added that the authorities followed standard procedures after his condition deteriorated.
Police sources said Lipon was arrested on December 8, 2024, from the Moghbazar area of Dhaka and had remained in jail since then.
Lipon entered politics in 1996 as president of Palashbari Upazila Jubo League. Over the years, he held several key posts in local party politics, including organising secretary and later general secretary of Palashbari Upazila Awami League. He became president of the Gaibandha district unit in 2018.
Officials said further legal and administrative steps will be taken following his death.
