Police arrested a 34-year-old man allegedly for placing a copy of the Qur’an inside a church in Rajshahi city on Sunday.
The arrestee is Md Golam Chowdhury of Chhotbon Gram New Colony area under Kashiadanga Police Station in the city.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique, addressing at a press conference on Sunday afternoon, said that an unidentified person secretly left a bag wrapped in red cloth in the prayer hall of Uttam Ghosh Mesh Palak Church in the city at about 6:45am on Sunday.
When the church sister, who noticed the bag first, opened the bag and found a copy of the Qur’an inside it. Later, the church authorities informed the matter to the police.
Abu Kalam Siddique said that they identified the person by checking the CCTV footage and with the help of information technology, and arrested him at the New Market area under Boalia Model Police Station in the city at about 12:00 noon.
The police official said that they came to know from the primary investigation that the accused left the Qur'an in the church to destroy the religious solemnity and communal harmony, and create anarchy in the country on the Christmas Day.
He also said that the accused claimed him to be prophet Isa and he came back to earth with the Qur'an in hand.
‘The process of filing a case in this connection is underway’, the police official further said, adding that they were interrogating the arrestee and investigating into the matter to know whether anyone was involved with him in this incident.
