Fresh violence broke out in Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon following a rally organized by the National Citizens` Party (NCP).
After the event concluded, clashes erupted between security forces and a group of alleged attackers. Amid escalating tensions, several central NCP leaders took refuge at the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP).
Speaking to reporters, NCP leaders said, "A part of our motorcade is headed toward Madaripur, but we fear they might come under attack. One section of the convoy was unable to proceed due to assaults by Awami League supporters and the banned student group, Chhatra League. That’s why we have sought shelter at the SP’s office."
NCP’s Nasiruddin Patwary accused ruling party supporters of launching the attacks. "As we were leaving the rally venue, Awami League members attacked us. We are now trapped in a location. The administration had earlier assured us the situation was under control, but both the police and army are remaining completely inactive," he alleged.
To control the situation, police reportedly used rubber bullets and sound grenades.
Earlier in the day, multiple incidents occurred, including an attack at the NCP rally venue, arson targeting a police vehicle, and an attack on the convoy of the local UNO (Upazila Nirbahi Officer).
The situation in Gopalganj remains volatile as political tension intensifies following NCP’s “March to Gopalganj” program.
