A group of local individuals, reportedly supporters of the Awami League, attacked and vandalized the rally venue of the National Citizens` Party (NCP) in Gopalganj on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at 1:45 PM at the Municipal Park in Gopalganj town, where NCP was scheduled to hold a public rally as part of its ongoing campaign.
Eyewitnesses reported that 200 to 300 people, armed with sticks and clubs, stormed the venue and began vandalizing the stage.
During the attack, police officers who had been stationed near the stage reportedly withdrew to the adjacent court premises, while NCP leaders and activists fled the area for safety.
The attackers smashed chairs on the stage and tore down banners, causing significant damage. Shortly afterward, Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman arrived at the scene. In response, NCP activists regrouped and, along with police, chased away the attackers, who then fled.
At 2:05 PM, senior NCP leaders including Convener Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, and Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam arrived at the venue. As of 2:15 PM, they were delivering speeches from the stage, continuing the program despite the earlier violence.
