Police vehicle set ablaze ahead of NCP ‘March to Gopalganj’

A police vehicle was set ablaze in Gopalganj on Wednesday morning in an incident linked to a march organized by the National Citizens‍‍` Party (NCP).

The incident occurred around 9:30 AM at Khatiyagor Charpara on the Ulpur–Durgapur road in the Sadar upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sajedur Rahman stated that central leaders of the NCP were scheduled to arrive at the Municipal Park in Gopalganj town as part of the party’s local march.

He alleged that supporters of Ataur Rahman Piyal, General Secretary of the district unit of the banned organization Chhatra League, attacked the police vehicle in an attempt to sabotage the event.

“Supporters of Ataur Rahman Piyal set fire to and vandalized a police vehicle in the Ulpur area to disrupt the planned march,” OC Sajedur Rahman said. “Police arrived at the scene immediately after receiving the report.”

Earlier reports from the district police stated that three officers—Inspector Ahmed Biswas of Gopinathpur Police Outpost and constables Kawser and Minhaj—were injured and are currently receiving treatment at Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital.

Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and said that investigations are underway to identify those responsible.

The NCP has been conducting its nationwide “July Podojatra” program since July 1, holding marches in various districts. Wednesday’s event in Gopalganj was part of this month-long campaign.
