The speculation has finally been confirmed. President Mohammed Shahabuddin is set to resign, with his family confirming that he is expected to resign on Saturday or Sunday. The decision has reportedly been made due to health reasons.
Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as Bangladesh`s 22nd president on April 24, 2023. However, he is leaving office before completing his term.
On August 5, former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country following a student-led mass uprising. An interim government headed by Dr. Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on October 8.
At the time, several political parties, including the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, demanded the president`s removal from office. Demonstrations were also held outside the presidential residence, Bangabhaban, calling for his resignation. During the tenure of the interim government, the president was rarely seen attending public events outside Bangabhaban.
However, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) did not support calls to remove the president, citing concerns over a possible constitutional crisis. Later, after the BNP`s victory in the 13th parliamentary election on February 12, President Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to Tarique Rahman as prime minister in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. He also addressed the inaugural session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
Under Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the president may resign by submitting a signed letter addressed to the speaker of parliament. Article 54 states that if the office of the president becomes vacant, the speaker will serve as acting president until a new president is elected. Under Article 123, parliament must elect a new president within 90 days of the vacancy.
