A group of protesters vandalized the ancestral home of Raushan Ershad, the widow of former Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, in Mymensingh’s Town Hall area on Thursday afternoon.
The attackers damaged furniture and under-construction structures on the premises.
The incident is linked to ongoing protests by a student group named Boishomybirodhi Chhatro Andolon (Anti-Discrimination Student Movement), who oppose the commercial use of the house.
They previously demanded the site be turned into a museum commemorating the July uprising instead of being used for a restaurant, claiming the property symbolized collaboration with the former ruling regime.
The protest escalated after the group’s memorandum to the district administration went unanswered.
Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Mofidul Alam later acknowledged public sensitivity surrounding the site and said commercial development there is not appropriate, promising to take necessary action.
