Now Prothom Alo editor, fellows sued under DSA case

A case has been filed against Matiur Rahman, the editor of widely reached national daily Prothom Alo. The case was filed at Ramna Police Station under the Digital Security Act, 2018 at around 11:00 pm on Wednesday. 

Apart from the editor, the newspaper's Staff Reporter (Savar Correspondent) Samsuzzaman Shams, an associate cameraman and unidentified persons have been accused in the case.

The police officers of Ramana police station could not provide any information about this case till early Thursday. However, a police officer told the media that a person named Advocate Abdul Malek (Moshiur Malek), 61, is the plaintiff in the case. His permanent address is stated in the case is Begati Police Station in Barguna district and present address is in Gulshan.

Inspector Abu Ansar of Ramna police station has been appointed as the investigating officer in this case.

Sections 25 (2), 31, 35 of the Digital Security Act, have been mentioned in the case for bringing the charges that the accused used print and electronic media to spread false information to tarnish the image or reputation of the state and spread misinformation.

It is also stated in the case statement that the case was filed based on the written complaint of the plaintiff.

Legal notice

Mithun Biswas, a lawyer of a Chattogram court has served a legal notice on Prothom Alo Editor and Publisher Matiur Rahman, executive editor Sajjad Sharif and reporter Samsuzzaman Shams for publishing "fake, false and fabricated photo report hurting the spirit of the Liberation War and independence of Bangladesh".

The notice was sent to Prothom Alo's office through postal service on Wednesday.

Mithun is a former member of 22nd National Convention Preparation sub-committee Bangladesh Awami League, according to Prothom Alo report.

In the notice, he asked the editor, executive editor and the reporter to unconditionally apologize before nation within seven days or else legal action would be taken for creating unrest and causing deterioration of law and order.
