Jahangir Kabir, the General Secretary of the Barguna District Awami League, has been detained by a police team from Dhaka.
The arrest was confirmed by Barguna Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Mizanur Rahman, who stated that Kabir is accused of conspiring to incite unrest in Barguna.
The detention follows the viral spread of a phone conversation between Jahangir Kabir and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the three-minute call, which surfaced on social media, Hasina directed Kabir to maintain discipline in party activities and properly observe the anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination on August 15.
During the call, Jahangir Kabir assured Hasina, "Apa, don`t worry. If you worry, we become weak. We remain strong." Hasina responded, expressing confidence despite recent violence against the police and party workers, and emphasizing the strength and resilience required.
According to OC KM Mizanur Rahman, Kabir was taken from his residence in Amtala, Barguna Municipality at around 6 am on Wednesday. He has been transported to Dhaka for further proceedings.
