Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, the former coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement that sparked the ouster of the Awami League regime and a recently resigned adviser to the interim government, has ended weeks of intense speculation by announcing his candidacy as an independent in the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-10.
In a video posted on his verified Facebook page on Friday, Asif formally declared his decision. "I will contest the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-10 as an independent candidate. I seek your support and cooperation," he captioned the post.
Dhaka-10, encompassing Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, New Market, and Hazaribagh, lists Asif as a registered voter—a fact he personally confirmed.
Rumors had swirled for days about his political future. Several parties reportedly courted him, with the strongest buzz linking him to the Ganadhikar Parishad. The party`s general secretary, Md Rashed Khan, fueled the talk Thursday, noting, "There have been positive discussions about working together." Whispers also dismissed any move to the National Citizens` Party (NCP), formed by fellow ex-student movement leaders.
The speculation peaked after Asif`s Wednesday press conference, where he resigned as adviser for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives—hinting at his electoral ambitions.
With this announcement, the student movement icon steps into the fray on his own terms, independent of party banners.
