Large parts of the country are expected to remain under a heatwave despite the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in several regions over the next 24 hours, according to the latest weather forecast.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said mild to moderate heatwave conditions are continuing across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions, along with the districts of Chandpur, Noakhali and Brahmanbaria.

While hot weather is expected to persist, the weather office has also forecast rain in different areas of the country. Light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorms, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning, may occur at a number of places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

A few areas in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions may also receive rain during the period. Some locations could experience moderately heavy rainfall, the forecast said.

Meteorologists expect daytime temperatures to decrease slightly in the northeastern region, while temperatures in most other parts of the country are likely to remain largely unchanged. Night temperatures are also expected to stay stable.

The weather office warned that discomfort may continue because of rising moisture levels in the atmosphere, making conditions feel hotter than the actual temperature.

According to BMD data, the highest temperature recorded on Wednesday was 38.5 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur. The lowest temperature recorded this morning was 23.5 degrees Celsius in Sylhet.
