Measles outbreak death toll reaches 605 in Bangladesh

Four more children have died from measles-related complications in Bangladesh, pushing the total death toll from the ongoing outbreak to 605, the Directorate General of Health Services said Thursday.

The deaths occurred in the 24 hours to 8am Thursday and were reported across Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Rangpur. One was a confirmed measles case while the remaining three were classified as suspected.

Since the outbreak began on March 15, a total of 91 confirmed and 514 suspected measles patients have died.

New case numbers also remain high. Another 69 confirmed cases were recorded in the same period, bringing total confirmed cases to 9,260. Suspected cases rose by 1,136 in a single day, taking the cumulative figure to 75,708.

Hospital admissions since the outbreak began have reached 61,194, of whom 57,043 have been discharged after treatment, according to the DGHS Health Emergency Operations Center.
