Bangladesh must move ahead under the leadership of Tarique Rahman to protect the country’s future, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday.
Speaking at an election rally in Panchagarh, Mirza Fakhrul said a credible national election scheduled for February 12 would open the way for forming a strong and effective government. He expressed hope that the upcoming polls would reflect the will of the people.
The BNP leader made the comments while campaigning for BNP-backed candidate Farhad Hossain Azad in the Panchagarh-2 constituency. The rally was held at Debiganj Devdarutala in the afternoon.
During his speech, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that a political party was trying to disrupt the election process. He claimed the party had opposed Bangladesh’s independence and said such a force could not be trusted by the nation.
Referring to past incidents, he said people associated with Rajshahi University were familiar with the party’s violent activities and urged voters to stay alert.
Mirza Fakhrul added that the people of Bangladesh do not place their trust in any group that stood against the country’s independence, saying such forces have no credibility in national politics.
Several BNP leaders also addressed the rally, including Upazila BNP President Abdul Gani, Election Management Committee President Advocate Golam Hafiz, General Secretary Abul Hossain Md Tabarak Happy, and leaders from different party levels.
