BNP expels journo leader Shaukat Mahmood from party

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expelled its vice-chairman also journalist leader Shaukat Mahmood from all posts of the party. 

Shaukat is the former president and general secretary of the National Press Club. Besides, he was also the convener of the BNP-supported Combined Professional Council.

A press release signed by BNP assistant office secretary Md Taiful Islam Tipu, informed about the expulsion. Shaukat Mahmud has been serving as the vice chairman of BNP since 2016. 

According to the handout, “Shaukat has been expelled from all positions including primary membership of the BNP as per the decision of the party’s National Standing Committee based on specific allegations of breaching party discipline.”

Shaukat Mahmud told the media, “It is sad and I don't want to say anything else at this moment.”

On March 16, the Jatiya Insaf Kayem Committee (National Committee for Civil Rights) held a programme at a city hotel and demanded the formation of an interim national government. Shaukat Mahmood is the member secretary of the organisation.

Earlier in April 2022, the BNP issued a show-cause notice to Shaukat Mahmood after he had convened a rally under the banner Society of Professionals and called for the fall of the government.

Shaukat Mahmood was nominated as an advisor to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the fifth national council of BNP. Later, he was nominated as the Vice Chairman of BNP in the 6th council.
