BNP expresses deep concern over attack on NCP’s Gopalganj rally

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed grave concern over the violent attack on the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) during its pre-announced "March to Gopalganj" program on Wednesday.

In a statement sent to the media, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Following the downfall of the authoritarian Awami regime due to the student-led mass movement, certain miscreants are once again trying to destabilize the country through acts of anarchy to serve their own vested interests. The barbaric attack on NCP’s rally in Gopalganj, explosions of crude bombs, arson attacks on the vehicles of the UNO and law enforcement agencies, and the injury of police personnel are clear manifestations of this conspiracy.”

He further alleged that “due to the current deterioration in law and order, allies of the Awami League are attempting to push the interim government into a crisis through their desperate and destructive actions.” He added that such lawbreakers must be dealt with firmly and decisively.

Calling for national unity, Mirza Fakhrul urged people of all backgrounds and political affiliations to come together to protect democracy, voting rights, and national sovereignty, and to prevent a resurgence of fascism. “Any failure to do so,” he warned, “could again endanger the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh.”

The BNP leader also demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on the NCP’s program. He wished a speedy recovery for the injured police officers.
