BNP leader challenges government to justify post-December elections

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has challenged the government to present even a single valid reason for holding the next national election after December.

Speaking at a farmers‍‍` wing discussion event in Dhaka on Saturday, he emphasized that the people demand elections before December, and any delay beyond that lacks justification.

He alleged that while there is a façade of reform, no genuine progress is being made. Referring to an upcoming meeting scheduled for June 2 with the Chief Adviser, he said invitations for dialogue are made with formalities, but no real outcomes have followed.

Ahmed also criticized those labeling BNP leaders as traitors or foreign agents, asserting that these accusations are an insult to those who have spent the last 17 years resisting authoritarianism through exile, imprisonment, and sacrifice.

He described such propaganda as a deliberate attack on BNP‍‍`s democratic struggle.

He further alleged that both domestic and international actors are attempting to create division within the anti-authoritarian front.

According to him, this is part of a broader effort by certain groups to either prolong their hold on power or rehabilitate authoritarianism by weakening the democratic opposition.

It is noteworthy that BNP and Jamaat leaders had recently met with the Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, at the state guest house for discussions.
