BNP leader Ishraque says adviser Asif lost moral right to hold office

BNP leader Engineer Ishraque Hossain has criticized Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib, saying he has lost the moral right to remain in his position due to presenting false and misleading information to the media. Ishraque demanded Sajib’s resignation for violating his oath.

Speaking on Tuesday at the ongoing sit-in protest at Nagar Bhaban, calling for Ishraque Hossain to be handed over the responsibility as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), he said, “On Monday, Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud claimed that the oath-taking could not be conducted because the gazette’s validity expired while the matter was under consideration. If that were true, no elected representative in the future would be able to take oath. Meaning, if a gazette is published in favor of the winning candidate, the defeated candidate would file a writ petition in the High Court Division to prevent the oath-taking. If that writ remains pending and the 30-day period mentioned in the gazette expires, no representative would be able to take oath in the future.”

He further accused the advisor of appointing an administrator of his choice to gain financial and political benefits, thereby disregarding the mandate of the people and misleading the public with false information, which he called a form of deception.

Ishraque also said, “The Local Government Advisor mentioned that the citizens of Dhaka South City Corporation have been deprived of services for a long time. We firmly believe that due to his young age and lack of experience, he does not understand the types of services provided by the various city corporation departments.”

Concluding his remarks, Ishraque stated, “Advisor Asif Mahmud is very young and has a long path ahead of him. Therefore, respect for the public and for court rulings is expected from him. It is not his duty to mislead people with false information. The people, despite enduring hardships and oppression, have not deviated from their goals and he cannot mislead them.”
