Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, announced that discussions have led to consensus on 10 key issues, with a preliminary draft of the national charter already prepared. The commission aims to conclude the dialogue process by July 31, he said.
Speaking on Sunday at the 19th day of the second phase of dialogue with political parties, held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Professor Riaz emphasized that completing the dialogue and finalizing the charter are among the commission’s top priorities.
“We have reached consensus on 10 issues, while discussions on 7 others remain incomplete. Three topics are yet to be discussed,” he stated.
Riaz added that the initial draft of the charter will be shared with participating parties by tomorrow. “We hope they will provide feedback, which we intend to incorporate. Our goal is for all parties to sign the final version of the national charter,” he said.
He also clarified that the draft itself will not be directly discussed in the dialogue unless there are fundamental objections.
“If major concerns are raised, we will revisit it. Otherwise, submitted opinions will be integrated into the draft,” Riaz noted. The final version will include a preamble, background, and commitments, he added, and a specific day will be allocated for the formal signing of the charter.
Today’s session focused on the principles of state governance, the expansion of citizens` fundamental rights, and the proposal for the establishment of a Police Commission.
The dialogue was moderated by the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider and attended by several notable figures including Soffar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr. Ayub Mia.
