A petition for contempt of court has been filed against Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer for the northern region of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
The application was submitted on Wednesday to the High Court by a lawyer from the Supreme Court, Md. Jasim Uddin.
Prior to the petition, a legal notice had been served to Sarjis Alam last Saturday. The notice requested that he offer an unconditional apology to the Chief Justice through the Registrar General of the Supreme Court and provide a written explanation for his remarks.
It also called for a public apology to the nation via a press conference within two hours of receiving the notice.
According to the notice, the High Court had summarily dismissed a writ petition that challenged the tribunal verdict and official gazette declaring Ishraq Hossain as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
Following this dismissal, Sarjis Alam allegedly made a post on his verified Facebook profile containing comments about the higher judiciary. These comments were deemed derogatory and disrespectful toward the apex court, amounting to contempt of court.
