The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) began its 13th congress in Dhaka this afternoon with the slogan "Establish a left democratic government free from exploitation and inequality to change society."

The four-day congress was inaugurated at 3:15pm at the Engineers Institute with the national anthem and the international communist song, followed by a council session at the BMA auditorium, reports The Daily Star.

A total of 525 delegates elected from district conferences and 26 observers are participating in the event. Senior leaders above 70 or with over 30 years of involvement in the party will be honoured.

The congress will finalise strategies and programmes based on discussions held across the branch, thana, upazila, and district units over the past three months.

According to CPB leaders, widening inequality, unemployment, insecurity, and erosion of democratic rights make it urgent to build a left democratic alternative.

The event will also form several committees, including the presidium, audit, credential, proposal selection, and publication committees.

The party said the congress will formulate outline policies to resist imperialist and hegemonic powers, foreign interference, and moves like leasing out national resources such as ports.
