Nahid Islam, Convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has stated that while some political parties support the formation of a National Constitutional Council, others oppose it.
He emphasized that those who are against the proposal must come forward with alternative solutions.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday during a break at the third day of the second phase of dialogues between political parties and the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Nahid expressed full support for the formation of the National Constitutional Council.
He argued that over the years, key constitutional bodies—such as the Election Commission, Public Service Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Human Rights Commission—have been politicized and rendered controversial.
In particular, he pointed out that the electoral process has been systematically destroyed, with the Election Commission consistently justifying one-sided elections.
Additionally, he noted the failure of the Human Rights Commission to play any significant role in addressing issues such as enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Nahid stressed the importance of ensuring that the government has no influence over the appointments to these institutions.
He said the priority should be to maintain transparency in these bodies to truly fulfill the aspirations of the people.
