Dr. Yunus: Election participation of Awami League depends on the party’s own decision

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, stated that the Awami League must make its own decision on whether or not to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

His remarks came during an exclusive interview with the BBC, which was published on Wednesday according to UK local time.

When asked about the Awami League’s stance on joining the national elections, Yunus said, “They (Awami League) will make the decision on whether they will participate in the election or not. I cannot make this decision on their behalf. The Election Commission will decide who can participate in the election.”

The next national elections, according to Yunus, are expected to be held between December 2025 and March 2026.

However, the timeline could shift depending on how quickly necessary reforms can be carried out, as these are crucial for ensuring a free and fair election.

“My government will arrange the election between December 2025 and March 2026,” he mentioned, adding that the timeframe is flexible based on the speed of reforms.

In a reflection on his unexpected leadership role, Dr. Yunus explained that he never anticipated leading the government, having no prior experience in handling such responsibilities.

“I had no idea that I would lead the government. I had never run a government operation before, yet I had to understand the situation and work accordingly,” he revealed.

Yunus also commented on the law and order situation in the country, noting that it remains stable compared to previous years.

“If you compare it with the same time last year, it (law and order) is fine. What is happening now is nothing different or unique compared to other times,” he said, dismissing any suggestions that the current situation is unusual.

While addressing concerns about the ongoing situation, Yunus put the blame on the previous government, emphasizing that the current state of affairs is something inherited over time.

“I do not support that such incidents should happen. I am saying that you must understand we are not an ideal country or an ideal city that we have suddenly created. This is a situation that has been inherited and has continued for many, many years,” he remarked.

As the interim government prepares for the next parliamentary elections, the focus remains on implementing reforms to ensure a fair voting process.

For now, the question of whether the Awami League will participate in the elections is one that only the party itself can answer.
