The Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, has described the egg attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) Member-Secretary Akhtar Hossain as an “unfortunate incident.”
Speaking to journalists on Monday night (September 22, local time) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, the Press Secretary said the matter would be handled by Bangladesh’s Consulate and Foreign Ministry.
“The attack on the NCP leader was an unfortunate incident,” Shafiqul Alam said. “Our Consulate and Foreign Ministry will look into iut.”
He also outlined the Chief Adviser’s engagements at the United Nations, saying the leader attended a side event on social business and received an SDG Award alongside two other recipients.
During a meeting with the US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, various issues were discussed, including Bangladesh’s upcoming elections. According to Shafiqul Alam, the Chief Adviser reiterated that the country is largely prepared for the polls and assured that they will be free, fair, and impartial.
The United States reportedly expressed its readiness to provide all forms of cooperation to Bangladesh. Other topics discussed included reviving SAARC, strengthening ties with Nepal and Bhutan, and Bangladesh’s bid for ASEAN membership.
Shafiqul Alam added that US–Bangladesh trade relations were also on the agenda and highlighted that Sergio Gor is a close associate of President Trump, noting that the envoy would personally raise these issues with the US President.
