The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has described the outcome of the national election as a victory not only for the party but also for democracy and the country as a whole.
Speaking to reporters on Friday outside the BNP chairman’s Gulshan office, Mahdi Amin, spokesperson of the party’s Central Election Steering Committee, said the results reflect the will and hopes of the people of Bangladesh.
He said the election marks the return of a democratic transition and expressed confidence that the process will help rebuild a country where citizens’ rights and freedoms are protected.
Mahdi described BNP as a mass-based party deeply connected to the emotions and aspirations of the people.
According to him, the strong public support shown in the election proves that BNP’s message of grassroots empowerment, independence and national sovereignty has resonated widely.
He said the party’s victory was decisive and overwhelming.
Mahdi also said BNP believes the trust shown by voters in party chairman Tarique Rahman will translate into responsible leadership in the future.
He said BNP sees Tarique Rahman as a future prime minister who will work to restore people’s ownership of the state and protect democratic rights.
He added that a future BNP-led government would focus on building a transparent, accountable and people-oriented administration. He said the party’s political journey has involved years of struggle and sacrifice, including repression against its leaders and activists.
Mahdi said BNP remains committed to safeguarding independence, sovereignty and democracy, and expressed hope that the party’s leadership would meet the expectations of families who suffered during past political movements.
Responding to questions, he said the election completed a long-awaited democratic transition through what he described as a free and credible voting process.
He also thanked international leaders who sent congratulatory messages following the election, saying the party leadership would respond at the appropriate time.
According to unofficial results from Thursday’s 13th parliamentary election, BNP won 209 of the 299 seats contested.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest force, securing 68 seats.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the official results after completing all required formalities.
