BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed optimism that the forthcoming national election will be organized by the interim government in February next year.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.) in Sylhet on Monday morning, Fakhrul said, "We are hopeful that through this election, the nation will return to democracy, and people’s democratic rights will be restored. We believe the country will get back on the right track."
Following his visit to Shahjalal`s shrine, he also offered prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran (R.A.) before joining a prayer and discussion meeting organized by Sylhet district and metropolitan BNP at a community center in Pathantula.
Responding to reporters, Fakhrul stated, “For the past 15 years, we fought against fascism. Around six million of our leaders and activists have faced false cases. Thousands have been killed, and more than 1,700 have been forcibly disappeared. Among them is Sylhet`s brave leader Ilias Ali. The fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina finally fell during the people’s uprising in July–August.”
He further mentioned that a significant meeting was recently held in London between BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus. "The February election timeline was broadly discussed in that meeting," Fakhrul confirmed.
Mirza Fakhrul arrived at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport at 9:25 AM, accompanied by senior BNP leaders, including Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Iqbal Mahmud Tuku, AZM Zahid Hossain, and Advisor to the Chairperson Habibur Rahman. Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury was also among the delegation.
They were welcomed at the airport by BNP Chairperson’s advisers Khondkar Abdul Muqtadir, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, and Ariful Haque Chowdhury, along with central organizing secretary GK Gaus, assistant organizing secretary Miftah Siddique, and Sylhet district and city BNP leaders.
