BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said many people sacrificed their lives over the last 15 years to save the country from the grip of the terrible fascist.

“In this struggle, people were martyred not only in the last two months, rather numerous people were martyred over the last 15 years. And they sacrificed their lives to protect the country from the hands of this terrible fascist,” he said.

The BNP Secretary General was addressing a memorial meeting on ‘life and works of Ambassador Serajul Islam Sabuj’ at Brac Centre Inn in the capital.

Finance and Commerce Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, Prof Mahbub Ullah and Prof Dilara Chowdhury among others, also spoke at the event arranged by The Dhaka Forum (TDF).

About the late Serajul Islam, Mirza Fakhrul said he was a very talented, intelligent and outspoken person, and genuine patriot. “With his death, we’ve lost a friend and the country has lost a patriotic diplomat,” he said.

Recalling his contribution to the struggle against Sheikh Hasina’s regime, he said when the BNP leaders were sent to jail, a vacuum was created in case of communicating with the foreign diplomats. “At that time, Sabuj carried out this responsibility, risking his life,” he said.

The BNP leader said they were very hopeful that Sabuj would be engaged in the tasks of the country when it becomes independent for the second time.

Describing Sabuj as a martyr, he said the diplomat always contributed to this struggle through his voice and pen.

Fakhrul prayed to Allah to grant him heaven and give his family patience to endure what they lost.

BNP leaders Prof AZM Zahid Hossain, Mizanur Rahman Minu,Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Zahir Uddin Swapan and Shama Obaid, former diplomat Iftekhar Karim and Shahed Akhtar, Ambassador Sabuj’s wife Nazrin Fouzia, his two daughters Mousumi Islam Sabrina and Nowrin, among others, were present in the event.

On August 11 last, former Ambassador Serajul Islam Sabuj passed away at a hospital in the USA. He was buried at Banani Graveyard in the city on August 18 last.
