Foreign partners express confidence on elections in February: BNP

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has stated that confidence regarding the upcoming February elections is not only increasing within Bangladesh but also among the country’s international partners.

He made the remarks on Sunday following a meeting with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Tracy Ann Jacobson.

Earlier in the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with the U.S. diplomat at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

Amir Khasru and BNP Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid were also present during the discussions.

Following the meeting, Amir Khasru told reporters that the discussions largely focused on tariff issues, with the U.S. side seeking BNP’s perspective.

BNP emphasized the importance of finding a solution that would protect Bangladesh’s export interests.

When asked whether the topic of the election was discussed, Khasru confirmed that the matter naturally came up.

He said the U.S. representatives inquired about BNP’s election preparations and overall stance, to which BNP provided their position.

He also noted that the much-discussed London meeting received positive recognition from the U.S. side.

According to Khasru, the meeting has contributed to a sense of relief and optimism within the country and helped create an election-oriented environment.

Responding to whether the February election timeline was specifically addressed, Khasru said there seems to be a general consensus now regarding the timing of the polls, which has brought comfort to both domestic stakeholders and international partners.

He remarked that this clarity is helping Bangladesh’s partners plan their future engagements with the country, as it signals a transition towards democratic order.

On the tariff issue, Khasru warned that any increase in tariffs on Bangladeshi products could severely damage the country‍‍`s garment export sector.

He said BNP is willing to cooperate with the government to ensure a fair resolution that protects Bangladesh’s trade interests.

The two sides also discussed opportunities for increasing bilateral trade and attracting more foreign investment in Bangladesh.
