High Court orders to complete Jahangir's graft case by 6 months

The High Court on Wednesday directed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to complete the investigation into the graft allegations against the expelled mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Jahangir Alam within 6 months.

The High Court bench consisting of Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order.

Attorney General Abu Mohammad Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik were on the side of the state in the High Court hearing. On the other hand, senior lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan and Advocate Titus Hillol Rema were on behalf of the ACC.

Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Ekramul Haque Tutul filed a writ in the High Court on behalf of a local resident of Gazipur seeking directions to investigate the corruption of expelled Mayor Jahangir. In the writ, the anti-corruption commission chairman and the concerned parties were made defendants in the writ.

It is to be noted that Jahangir was temporarily suspended from the post of mayor of Gazipur City Corporation on 25 November 2021 due to various allegations including fake tender, RFQ, ununusual recruitment in various positions.

Before this, he was expelled from Awami League. In June 2022, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) started investigating Jahangir Alam's corruption. An investigation team was also formed by the ACC. The expelled mayor of Gazipur is hoping to return to the post of mayor as Awami League 'pardoned' him recently.
