Jahangir Alam yesterday filed a writ in the High Court challenging the validity of the cancellation of candidacy for the post of Mayor in Gazipur City Corporation.
Earlier, Jahangir Alam's appeal against the cancellation of his candidature for the post of mayor in the Gazipur City Corporation elections on May 4 was rejected.
Jahangir Alam submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the post of mayor in the Gazipur City Corporation elections. Besides, he submitted another nomination paper in the name of his mother, Zayeda Khatun for the post of mayor.
On April 30, Gazipur City Election Returning Officer, Faridul Islam canceled the nomination papers of Jahangir Alam, who was denied the party nomination of Awami League for the post of mayor after checking the nomination papers. His nomination papers were cancelled on the charge of default. However, the nomination papers of his mother Zayeda Khatun were declared valid.
Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League President, Azmat Ullah Khan has been nominated by Awami League for the post of mayor in Gazipur city elections. Jahangir Alam went beyond the party decision and collected nomination papers to become an independent candidate.
