Jamaat alleges false case over airport cash recovery

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday claimed that the detention of its Thakurgaon district Ameer Belal Uddin with a large amount of cash was a “planned drama” by law enforcement agencies.

At a press conference held at the party’s central office in Moghbazar, Assistant Secretary General Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair said the money recovered from Belal Uddin was linked to his personal business dealings and had no connection to the ongoing election.

He said Belal was travelling for business purposes and was carrying cash because banks were closed at the time. “It is normal for a businessman to carry money for family or other legitimate needs,” Zubair told reporters, adding that the incident was being given a different meaning through media reports.

Zubair alleged that some members of law enforcement had staged the incident and were trying to mislead the public. He also said Belal Uddin became ill due to mental pressure after the detention and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The Jamaat leader further claimed that party candidates and polling agents were facing harassment and attacks in different areas. He alleged that certain members of the administration were supporting a particular political party, creating fear among voters.

“If neutrality is not maintained, the public will hold those responsible accountable,” he warned.

Earlier on Wednesday, police detained Belal Uddin at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari. During initial questioning, police said around Tk 50 lakh in cash was recovered from him. Investigations are ongoing.
