NCP alleges Election Commission actions influenced by political pressure

The National Citizen Party (NCP) on Monday claimed that some recent actions of the Election Commission appear to have been taken under the influence of certain political groups.

NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan made the allegation while speaking to reporters after a meeting between an 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the Chief Election Commissioner at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.

Asif Mahmud said the Election Commission stepped back from deploying Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) members at polling stations after pressure from a particular party.

He said the commission informed them that the issue is now under review, but NCP has demanded that BNCC members remain assigned to polling centres.

He argued that the upcoming election will be different from previous ones and said the presence of additional forces would help maintain law and order.

“Extra support at polling centres can play a positive role in ensuring security,” he added.

The NCP spokesperson also accused the commission of following recommendations from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the matter of administrative reshuffles.

He claimed that transfers and removals of officials were being carried out unusually fast when requested by candidates of a specific party.

“In some cases, officers are removed on the same day or the next day after such requests,” he said.

Asif Mahmud further alleged that complaints submitted by NCP candidates against certain officials have not received any response from the Election Commission so far.

He urged the commission to act in a neutral and transparent manner to ensure a fair election environment.
