NCP alleges militant-style attack by Awami League in Gopalganj

NCP press conference held Wednesday night at Khulna press club.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that the Awami League carried out a militant-style attack with the intent to kill its central leaders during a public rally in Gopalganj.

At a press conference held around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Khulna Press Club, NCP Convenor Nahid Islam made the claim, stating, "The Mujibist terrorists—banned groups like the Chhatra League and other affiliated wings of the Awami League—launched a militant-style assault on our convoy in Gopalganj to assassinate the leaders of the mass uprising."

NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, Chief Organizer (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam, Senior Joint Convenor Samanta Sharmin, and Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Zara were also present at the press conference.

According to the NCP leaders, the attack took place following a street rally organized at the Gopalganj Municipal Park.

After the event concluded, activists of the ruling party allegedly launched an attack with sticks and rods on the NCP leaders and supporters. Prior to that, incidents of arson on police vehicles and an attack on the Upazila Nirbahi Officer‍‍`s (UNO) car were also reported in the area.

Despite the violence, the NCP leadership reached Khulna under the protection of law enforcement agencies. “

We went to Gopalganj to listen to the people and share our vision,” said Nahid Islam. “The rally was a success, but on our way to Madaripur, our convoy and law enforcement came under attack by fascist elements of the Awami League and Mujibist terrorists.”

Referring to the ruling party’s alleged involvement, the NCP convenor said, “It is now evident to the nation that they have transformed into extremists. Since August 5, Gopalganj has become a safe haven for fascists and members of banned organizations facing legal charges.”

In light of the attack, the NCP has suspended its scheduled rallies in Madaripur and Shariatpur. However, Thursday’s pre-scheduled event in Faridpur will proceed as planned.

“Our movement will continue in every district, no matter the obstacles or assassination attempts,” Nahid Islam declared, announcing a nationwide protest programme for Thursday.
