NCP calls FY27 budget unrealistic, warns of larger deficit

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has criticized the proposed FY2026-27 national budget, arguing that its revenue and deficit projections do not reflect the country‍‍`s current economic realities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NCP‍‍`s shadow budget committee chief Dr Atik Mujahid said the government‍‍`s fiscal plan appears overly optimistic and could result in a significantly larger budget deficit than officially projected.

According to the party, the proposed revenue collection target of Tk 6.95 lakh crore will be difficult to achieve under existing economic conditions. As a result, NCP believes the actual revenue shortfall could exceed Tk 2 lakh crore.

Dr Mujahid argued that if revenue earnings fall short of expectations, the overall budget deficit could widen substantially beyond the government‍‍`s estimate.

The proposed budget projects a deficit of around Tk 2.5 lakh crore. However, the NCP leader claimed that the actual gap between income and expenditure could approach Tk 4.5 lakh crore if revenue collection fails to meet the target.

He warned that, based on a more conservative assessment of likely revenues, the country could face its largest budget deficit on record.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the proposed national budget in Parliament on Thursday. The spending plan, the first budget of the current government, has been set at Tk 9.38 lakh crore, making it the largest budget in Bangladesh‍‍`s history.

The NCP‍‍`s remarks add to the growing debate over the feasibility of the government‍‍`s revenue projections and financing strategy as economists, businesses and political parties begin reviewing the proposed budget.
