A member of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has been accused of raping a woman in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh area under the pretext of marriage.
The allegation has sparked controversy on social media for the past two days, with claims that the local police station refused to file a case.
According to police sources, the accused is an NCP leader. The victim’s family alleges that despite their attempt to lodge a case at Hazaribagh Police Station, officers refused to register it.
Instead, police said they have filed a general diary (GD) and will proceed with a formal case if initial investigations confirm the allegation.
The victim’s brother-in-law told the media on Sunday that his sister-in-law had been in a relationship with the accused for eight years. He claimed that the man raped her in June under a false promise of marriage.
“Since the accused is from Hazaribagh, I went to the police station to file a case, but they refused because he is an NCP leader,” he alleged.
However, Hazaribagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam denied the allegation of negligence, saying, “The accused lives in Hazaribagh, but the alleged crime took place in Kamrangirchar. We advised the complainant to go to Kamrangirchar Police Station. The claim that we refused the case is not true.”
Police sources confirmed that some NCP leaders visited the station, stating they had no objection to legal action if the accused is found guilty, but insisted he should not be falsely implicated.
NCP sources, however, claimed that there is no formal NCP committee in Hazaribagh, and those using the party’s name were formerly part of a citizens’ committee.
Kamrangirchar Police Station OC Aminur Rahman said, “A GD has been filed based on the victim’s complaint, and the matter is under investigation. If evidence of rape is found, a case will be registered.”
