BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that there can be no compromise when it comes to the spirit of 1971 or the question of democracy.

Speaking at a discussion hosted by the Ganatantra Mancha on Saturday, Fakhrul emphasized, “1971 is our foundation. Our war of independence is the core of our existence, and there can be no compromise there. Likewise, we do not compromise on democratic governance. We believe in democracy, and that is what we seek.”

The event, held at the National Press Club, marked the anniversary of the July–August mass uprisings. Titled “Expectations from the Mass Uprising and the Path to Democratic Transition,” the discussion featured leaders from various opposition platforms.

Fakhrul warned that the situation in the country is becoming increasingly complex. “It seems to me that those who do not believe in democracy, who oppose the people‍‍`s progress and the politics of a society free from exploitation, are regrouping. The fascist forces we once managed to expel are reorganizing from within and conspiring to reclaim power,” he said.

Highlighting a rise in mob rule, killings, and robberies, Fakhrul expressed concern, saying, “I’m not blaming any particular political party, but if we miss the opportunity in front of us now, Bangladesh will fall further behind. We’ll face repeated uprisings, people will sacrifice their lives, opportunities will arise—and we’ll keep losing them due to irresponsibility. That must not happen.”

Fakhrul stressed that the longer the delay, the murkier the situation becomes. “Those who were against the people and democracy are regrouping to undermine it again. The path forward lies in reforms, a national charter, and free elections. The interim government must take responsibility for this transition.”
