No objection to April 2026 election if July Charter comes first: NCP

In response to Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s announcement that Bangladesh’s national election will be held in the first half of April 2026, the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has stated that it has no objection to the proposed timeframe—provided that the July Charter is declared and key reform commitments tied to the charter are implemented within that period.

Speaking Friday evening, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain emphasized the party’s expectation that the election schedule would follow the formalization of the July Charter and related declarations. “If effective steps are taken to implement the July Charter, the July Declaration, and core institutional reforms within the proposed timeline, we have no objection to the announced date for the election,” he said.

The NCP, formed by young leaders of the July uprising, has consistently demanded that both a national election and a constituent assembly election be held. The party has also called for local government elections to precede national polls and has advocated for restructuring the Election Commission.

Since the July uprising, the NCP has positioned justice for past political crimes and structural reform of state institutions as the cornerstones of its agenda. The party has made it clear that any meaningful election must be preceded by genuine efforts to address these issues, particularly the trial of key political actors and the transformation of the existing political framework.

The NCP reiterated that its support for the announced election schedule is conditional and linked to visible progress in meeting the promises of the July movement. The party maintains that without addressing these foundational demands, any election risks lacking legitimacy and popular support.
