The Advisory Council of the interim government has decided to remove political party symbols from local government elections.
The decision was made at a council meeting held on Thursday, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at his office.
Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Local Government Ministry, confirmed the development through a post on his verified Facebook account.
He stated that the council approved amendments to four laws proposed by the Local Government Division, officially removing the provision for political party symbols in local elections.
Previously, the Awami League government—ousted through a mass uprising—had amended the law to introduce political symbols in local government polls.
The move marks a significant shift in election policy, aiming to depoliticize local governance and promote nonpartisan representation at the grassroots level.
