More than 51,000 Bangladeshis living abroad have registered to vote through the new postal ballot system ahead of the 13th national election and upcoming referendum.
According to the Election Commission (EC), 51,533 expatriates have signed up via the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app as of 10am today, including 43,646 men and 7,887 women.
The highest registrations came from the United States (10,335), followed by South Korea (8,889), Japan (6,158), Canada (5,865), Australia (4,755), South Africa (4,183), and China (1,651).
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the app is now open to all Bangladeshis abroad, removing previous five-day registration limits for each region. The registration window will remain open until 18 December.
He described the move as a major step in including overseas Bangladeshis in the country’s electoral process.
