Rangpur is gearing up for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s two distinct public rallies that are scheduled to take place in Taraganj (Rangpur-2) and Pirganj (Rangpur-6) upazilas on Tuesday.
The last time Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League president, was in Rangpur was on August 2.
Her visit is crucial to the political climate of the Rangpur region in order to guarantee the success of AL candidates there in the forthcoming national elections on January 7.
Abul Kalam Md Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury from Rangpur-2 (Taraganj and Badarganj), Tipu Munshi from Rangpur-4 (Kaunia and Pirgachha), Rashek Rahman from Rangpur-5 (Mithapukur), and Dr. Shirin Sharmin Choudhury from Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) are the candidates fielded by AL, with the Jatiya Party retaining the seats of Rangpur-1 and 3.
At both the public gatherings, a sizable contingent of party members, supporters, and individuals from various backgrounds are anticipated.
The party supporters from neighboring districts such as Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Panchagarh, and Thakurgaon are expected to join the rallies, as per the statements made by the local leaders of the AL.
According to Mazed Ali Babul, joint convener of Rangpur district AL, the premier is expected to arrive by plane at Syedpur Airport this morning, participate in the rally at Taraganj Waqf Estate Govt. College ground at noon, and then leave for the Pirganj Government High School grounds in the afternoon.
In the elections held in 2008 and 2014, Sheikh Hasina won the seat of Rangpur-6 lawmaker.
She let Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury to contest from Rangpur-6 and get elected as an MP in 2014 and 2018 by-elections.
The Awami League president will aslo offer prayers at the grave of her husband Dr MA Wazed Miah. She will visit her relatives and have lunch at Joysadan, founded by her son Sajib Wazed Joy, in Fatehpur village under Pirganj upazila.
