Salahuddin urges interim govt to notify EC of polls in February

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has called on the interim government to formally communicate its decision to hold the parliamentary elections in February to the Election Commission (EC) without delay.

Speaking at a discussion organized by Nagorik Oikya at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah Hall of the National Press Club on Monday (June 16), Salahuddin referenced the recent meeting in London between BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, which took place on Friday (June 13).

He emphasized that the interim government should act swiftly in the interest of the people and democracy to ensure a smooth democratic transition.

"Based on the decisions taken in London, we hope the interim government will promptly inform the Election Commission through proper channels so that the EC can officially announce it to the public," Salahuddin said.

Addressing a question raised by Saiful Haque, leader of the Revolutionary Workers Party, about whether there were discussions in London regarding immunity for government figures, Salahuddin clarified that there was no such agenda.

He stated that the Advisory Council of the interim government has been formed in accordance with constitutional provisions and the Supreme Court‍‍`s advisory ruling under Article 106.

"The advisors are to hold the status of ministers, and they must meet all eligibility criteria required to serve as ministers, including the restriction on holding foreign citizenship," he added.

Salahuddin also reminded that the approval of the next parliament will be constitutionally required for the interim government’s continuation.

"This ratification process and its legal implications must be carefully considered," he noted.

When asked about the London meeting by journalists on Sunday (June 15), Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said the Election Commission is only aware of the joint declaration through media reports.

"The declaration is unsigned, and without an official communication or formal document, no further steps can be taken," he remarked. "There may have been significant discussions behind the scenes that we are not yet aware of."

Following the London meeting, the Chief Adviser reportedly indicated that the election could be held before Ramadan in February if sufficient progress is made regarding reforms and accountability.

National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman stated that the Chief Adviser is aiming to conduct the election by mid-April next year but left open the possibility of an earlier date if conditions allow.
