Search Committee publishes 322 names

The search committee has published the list of proposed names for the posts of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs). All the proposed names of individuals, parties and organizations were published on the cabinet website on Monday evening. 

A total of 322 names were published in the list, respectively. 

Recently, the government made a law for the first time to form an election commission. Following this, on February 5, the President directed to form a search committee headed by Supreme Court Justice Obaidul Hasan.

Other members of the search committee are Justice SM Quddus Zaman of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, Auditor General (CAG) Muslim Chowdhury and Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Sohrab Hossain, former Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain and fiction and psychiatrist Anwara Syed Haque.

The search committee issued a notification calling for a general name proposal.

The search committee sent a letter to the registered political parties inviting them to propose names. On the other hand, it was decided to exchange views with prominent people of the country in three steps.

The three meetings with the search committee was attended by academics, former government officials, former military officers, top media persons, leaders of professional organizations and prominent citizens of various ranks.

According to the law, the search committee has to submit a recommendation to the President within 15 working days. As such, the search committee has time till February 27.

The committee will propose 2 candidates for CEC posts and 6 candidates for EC posts. The President will select one CEC and a maximum of four EC members. The Cabinet Committee is providing secretarial assistance to the search committee.
