Syndicate of Tarique's men left farmers out of fertilizer, food: Joy

The fertilizer syndicate of BNP leader Tarique Rahman and his cohorts made fertilizers out of the reach of farmers, causing a drastic fall in food production, said Prime Minister's ICT Advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

"Three to four crore marginal farmers could not even afford two meals a day. Capitalizing on that situation, BNP leaders and activists continued the Dadon (high-interest loan) system, leaving farmers penniless. Even BNP miscreants looted hundreds of thousands of fertilizer sacs from Fenchuganj fertilizer factory," he wrote in a post from his verified Facebook account.

When the dire need for fertilizer prompted farmers in Satkheera, Narail, Meherpur, Khulna, Rangpur, and Rajshahi to blockade roads with symbolic shrouds, the BNP government (2001-2006) set their hooligans on them, subjecting them to inhuman torture. Twelve farmers were shot down in different parts of the country, including Kurigram and Jamalpur. The lack of fertilizer disrupted the cultivation of Boro and Iri rice in Bangladesh, he added.

The present government, he said, enabled farmers to open a bank account with just Tk 10 and receive loans at small or zero interest, opening the gateway to change in their economic conditions.
