BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has welcomed the government’s decision to suspend the organizational activities of the Awami League, calling it a positive step, though delayed.
In a statement on Sunday, Fakhrul expressed that he was pleased to see the interim government taking action to halt the activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations.
This move, he said, was essential for expediting the trial of those involved in crimes against humanity linked to the ruling party.
Mirza Fakhrul stated that the BNP agreed with the decision to amend laws and bring the Awami League to trial.
However, he pointed out that had the government acted on BNP`s earlier requests, they would not have found themselves in an embarrassing situation under pressure.
The BNP had earlier demanded the trial of the Awami League for crimes against humanity in letters to the Chief Advisor in February and April.
Fakhrul also reiterated the BNP`s long-standing call for a ban on the Awami League through legal procedures.
Finally, Fakhrul urged the interim government to address growing public discontent over the lack of a clear election roadmap, reiterating BNP’s demand for early elections.
Protests demanding a ban on the Awami League had been ongoing since Thursday.
The demonstrators initially staged a sit-in outside the Chief Advisor’s residence and later moved to block Shahbagh intersection.
On Saturday, Law Advisor Professor Asif Nazrul announced that under anti-terrorism laws, all activities of the Awami League, including cyber operations, would be suspended until the trial of its leaders was completed.
This decision was made to safeguard national security, sovereignty, and the protection of trial witnesses and activists.
