We know what is waiting for us: Nahid Islam

Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has alleged that an attempted attack took place on Mahfuz Alam — a key figure in Bangladesh’s recent mass uprising and an adviser to the interim government — while he was in London. In a Facebook post, Nahid claimed that this was not the first such incident targeting Alam, citing previous attempts to harass or assault him in the United States.

According to Nahid, “Awami fascists” have repeatedly targeted Mahfuz Alam because of his prominent role during the political upheaval. He warned that these attacks signal a wider threat: “Mahfuz Alam is the target now. Next, all of us will be targets. We know what awaits us.”

Nahid further criticized what he called the “silent consent” surrounding these attacks, saying that those enabling or tolerating violence would also eventually suffer the consequences. “Fascism thrives on division,” he wrote, pointing out that while Mahfuz Alam has advocated an inclusive, responsible political path after the uprising, Bangladesh has not followed that trajectory.

The NCP convener also expressed concern that various groups opposing fascism are instead engaging in reactive and revenge-driven politics, which he warned could “inevitably bring fascism back.” “Time will prove Mahfuz Alam was right — if he survives long enough,” Nahid wrote.

He criticized the interim government for what he described as its lack of action or strong public messaging following multiple attacks on Mahfuz Alam. “No adviser or press secretary has ever commented. Even within the government and advisory council, a silent consent has emerged to disgrace and kill Mahfuz Alam,” the post alleged.

Nahid concluded by accusing the interim authorities of using Mahfuz Alam and then “pushing him toward death.” He vowed that these incidents would not be forgotten and would be answered politically.
