Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, widely known as Namewee, has been taken into police custody in connection with the investigation into the death of Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin.
Confirming the development on Wednesday, Namewee’s lawyer Joshua Tay said the 42-year-old artist voluntarily surrendered to police early in the morning and will remain in remand for six days. Authorities had earlier launched a search for him after reclassifying Hsieh’s death as murder based on new findings.
Hsieh, who was known online as “Nurse Goddess,” had over 500,000 Instagram followers and also ran an OnlyFans account. She was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur on October 22, just two days after arriving in Malaysia for a short trip.
According to local media reports, Namewee was the last person seen with her before her death. He was previously detained in a separate case involving alleged drug possession, which he denied. Police are currently awaiting full post-mortem and toxicology reports to determine the exact cause of death.
Following his surrender, Namewee posted on Instagram expressing grief over Hsieh’s death and vowed full cooperation with investigators. “He hopes the investigation will be fair and transparent,” said his lawyer.
Known for his bold and often controversial work addressing politics, race, and religion, Namewee has faced several arrests in Malaysia over the years. He was detained in 2016 for a music video titled Oh My God that used the Malay word “Allah” in scenes filmed at various houses of worship. In 2018, he was again arrested after releasing another video featuring dancers in dog masks, which authorities claimed insulted Islam.
Despite frequent controversies, Namewee insists his works criticize hypocrisy and misuse of authority rather than religion or ethnicity.
The rapper has been banned in China since 2021 after releasing a satirical song with Australian singer Kimberley Chen that mocked Chinese nationalism and referenced Taiwan’s sovereignty.
