Australia delivered a strong message in their opening World Cup match by defeating a tough opponent, Turkey, in impressive fashion. Despite being under pressure for most of the game, they held firm and secured a 2–0 victory through effective counter-attacking football.

In the Group D match in Vancouver, Canada, Turkey started on the front foot. Led by stars such as Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu, they dominated possession and tried to control the game. However, they were unable to find the back of the net.

On the other hand, disciplined defending and quick counter-attacks became Australia’s main strength. They took the lead early in the match through a goal from Nestory Irankunda. After that breakthrough, Australia grew more confident and became increasingly dangerous going forward.

In the second half, goalkeeper Patrick Beach played a key role in keeping Australia ahead, producing several important saves and putting in one of the standout performances by an Australian goalkeeper in World Cup history.

In the 75th minute, Australia doubled their lead through a brilliant counter-attack finished by Connor Metcalfe. His powerful long-range strike left the Turkish goalkeeper Çakır with no chance.

Despite late pressure, Turkey could not break through Australia’s well-organised defence, which dominated aerial battles and maintained control under pressure.

With this win, Australia made a strong start in Group D. In the other match of the group, the United States defeated Paraguay 4–1, also making a strong early statement.
