The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has condemned racist and discriminatory abuse directed at Netherlands players on social media following the team`s World Cup elimination.
The Netherlands bowed out of the tournament on Monday after losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout in their Round of 32 match in Monterrey. The match ended 1-1 after regular time before Morocco prevailed from the spot.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the 72nd minute, but Morocco equalised deep into stoppage time through Issa Diop, forcing the match into penalties.
In a statement issued after the defeat, the KNVB thanked the players, coaching staff and supporters for their commitment and backing throughout the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The association, however, strongly condemned the racist abuse that targeted several Dutch players online after the team`s exit.
It said football should unite people regardless of their background and stressed that racism and discrimination have no place in the sport, either on the pitch or on social media.
The KNVB reaffirmed its opposition to all forms of discriminatory behaviour and called for respect and inclusion across the football community.
