In a thrilling opening match of the three-match T20I series, Ireland Women triumphed over Bangladesh Women by 12 runs in Sylhet on Thursday, setting the stage for a gripping contest.
Opting to bat first, Ireland posted a strong total of 169 for 5, with Leah Paul leading the charge, scoring an unbeaten 79 off just 45 balls. She was well-supported by Gaby Lewis, who contributed 60 off 42 balls.
The pair combined for a brilliant 100-run partnership for the third wicket, which set a solid foundation for Ireland`s innings.
Bangladesh`s bowlers struggled to maintain consistency, with Nahida Akter being the most economical, giving away just 20 runs in 4 overs.
Jahanara Alam, Fariha Trisna, and Jannatul Ferdus each took a wicket, but they couldn’t contain the Irish batting charge.
Chasing a competitive target, Bangladesh got off to a fast start. Openers Dilara Akter (49 off 41) and Sobhana Mostary (46 off 35) shared an impressive 103-run partnership, with the hosts cruising to 56 without loss in the powerplay.
Despite their strong start, the middle order faltered under the pressure from Ireland`s disciplined bowlers.
Orla Prendergast and Arlene Kelly were the stars with the ball, both picking up three wickets.
Prendergast finished with figures of 3 for 24, while Kelly took 3 for 22, derailing Bangladesh`s chase.
Although Sharmin Akhter fought valiantly at the end with a quick-fire 23 off 13 balls, Bangladesh fell short, ending their 20 overs on 157 for 7.
Leah Paul was named Player of the Match for her match-winning knock, which included ten boundaries and two sixes. With the victory, Ireland now leads the series 1-0.
The match set the tone for what promises to be an exciting series, with Bangladesh looking to bounce back in the next fixture.
