Students below 18 will receive Pfizer, Moderna vaccine

‘Students below the age of 18 will receive Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccine’. Health Minister Zahid Maleque made the announcement on Saturday (September 4) morning, after visiting Nursing and Midwifery nursing licensing/pre-registration examination centre in the capital’s Tejgaon.

The Health and Family Welfare Minister said that students between 12 and 18 years will receive Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccine. However, in this case the decision will be finalized after receiving adequate doses of vaccine.

According to the guideline issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), administering vaccines to students depends on their age. If the student is above the age of 18, they can receive any vaccine. However, those between the age of 12 and 18 are being administered Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. If we start vaccinating students in this age frame, we will also follow the guidelines of WHO.

80 percent students at medical colleges and universities  have been inoculated, added the minister.

Asked on whether or not there is increased risk on transmission due to reopening of schools-colleges, the health minister said, “I cannot make a one-sided comment on this matter. Tomorrow (September 5), concerned officials will discuss how to keep the academic environment safe at an inter-ministerial meeting.
