2 militant leaders held as RAB raids Rohingya camp

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have detained two top leaders of new militant group Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya after conducting a drive at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

ANM Imran Khan, Senior Assistant Director of RAB (Legal and Media Wing), confirmed the information on Monday.

The detainees are Ranbir, the head of the military wing of the outfit, and his associate bomb expert Bashar.

RAB-15 Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Salam Chowdhury said acting on tip off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Kutupalong 7 no Rohingya camp in the morning. Sensing presence of the elite force, the gang members opened fire on the RAB prompting the RAB team to retaliate.

The elite force team detained two top militant leaders from the scene. Local and foreign-made firearms and ammunition were also recovered from their possession, the RAB official said.

Legal action will be taken against the detainees, he added.
